10/31 Fri Morning Update

Last night was one of the most difficult nights we've had since this all began. At about 10:30pm Ashley's nurse came in to check her diaper. In the hospital they like to test, measure and examine everything. So typically our nurses have been taking care of diaper changes. When the nurse opened up her diaper, we both looked down and were in shock because it appeared that her intestines were outside of her body. Her nurse quickly pulled a switch on the wall labeled "STAFF EMERGENCY" and within seconds every nurse and resident on the floor was in our room. Moments later the surgical resident on call was paged. When he arrived and took a look at Ashley, he paged his attending to come in from home. Up until this point, no one had moved or touched her because they were unsure if her intestines were still attached. When the surgical attending arrived she began examining her and for a moment my heart stopped because it appeared that her intestines were no longer attached. Right now they believe that the innermost layers of her intestines and bowels were sloughed off. They have sent it out for biopsy and it will take a few days to get the results back. Through this all Ash was very calm, but this morning she has been in a lot of pain. Ashley is very sick and I ask that everyone please continue to pray for her.

Oh Claudia, my heart just aches for Ashley and you and your family. That baby has just been through so much. I continue to pray for her every night and even lit a candle for her. I'm sure you are a mess right now, but please know that she is in good hands there. God bless you all.
